The Elms
Primary School
Our Vision for PE:
At The Elms, we use the Real PE approach and additional sports-based units to develop every child’s learning behaviours and fundamental movement skills. Our approach helps ALL children develop the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills needed to achieve in PE, sport and life. We place the learner at the heart of our practice.
At The Elms, we intend to inspire life-long learners who enjoy and engage with physical education. We create an enabling environment in PE where young people feel included, valued, challenged and supported to achieve their maximum potential.
FROM THE CHILDREN:
Spencer (Y1): "I like doing PE because it gives me exercise. I get stronger so I can lift weights when I am bigger."
George (Y2): "I like the cricket. I enjoyed doing the bowling. I like learning to catch because it helps me in goal at football."
Willow (Y3): "I like running around and playing games."
Ben (Y5) "I like throwing and catching. I like the challenges my teacher gives."

Latest News:
Sport for Champions - 9th June 2023
Robert Mitchell, high jumper, visited The Elms today. He talked to the children about his career so far and showed lots of photos of his career highlights as a high jumper.
The children took part in a circuit training event and completed spotty dogs, mountain climbers, press ups, star jumps and a meditation squat.
Everyone was suitably sweaty by the end of the event and fun was had by all!
We had lots of donations from parents and family members so thank you! The money is split between the Sport for Champions charity and the school.

Maypole Dancing - Saturday 6th May
On the King's Coronation Day, a group of children from The Elms danced around the may pole in Faringdon's Market Square.
The children danced brilliantly in the pouring rain! They created beautiful patterns with their ribbons under the watchful eye of Anne Garrison who taught the pupils in an after school club.
Despite the poor weather, there was a fantastic turn out in town. Parents, family friends and Faringdon residents clapped along to the music as the children skipped through their routines.
Well done to all of the children who danced and thank you to all of the families who turned up to support the children.

Netball Tournament at FCC 28.03.23
On Tuesday 28th March, 12 children from across Y5 and 6 represented The Elms in a netball tournament against other local schools.
A couple of children stood in last minute and the rest of the children had only played together once before the tournament. We were quite inexperienced compared to some of the more ‘established’ teams, but we kept up well with the opposition. A lot of Y6 children were involved in the tournament and some children were very tall indeed!
Despite the rain and the cold, we improved our skills as we went along. The FCC Sports Leaders completed activities with us between games.
There was a feeling of self-belief after one of our teams scored a goal.
Team A results: Draw, draw, loss, loss.
Team B results: Draw, loss, win, win.
Lots of the Elms team have been inspired to join the school netball club. It was great fun and we would love to play for the school again!
“It was tough at the start, but by the end it was quite enjoyable,” Harry in 6H
“I knew some of the children from other sporting events. They were very good!” Owen in 6M
“We all passed on our thanks to Mrs Kenyon for organising the event. The sport leaders were excellent! “ Alexis – 6H

Mrs Woodward and Mrs Knapp were really proud of all of the children.
Special mention to Olly as some of the teachers and sports coaches from the other schools pointed out his speed, ability to find a space and his tactical maneuvers. Very well done Olly!

Comic Relief Dance-a-thon 17.03.23
On Friday 17th March the whole school joined in with a Dance-a-thon to raise money for charity. Children wore red clothes and sports kits to school, and many families gave generous donations towards Comic Relief.
I would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who danced and everyone who donated towards Comic Relief. We managed to raise £250 for charity!
Cricket Workshops - February 2023
5O and 4N took part in a cricket workshop run by All Stars Cricket. The children had a great time and really enjoyed learning new skills.
Here is what some of the children had to say:
Ollie in Y5 - We did some bowling with tennis balls and we had to knock the stumps down. I managed to do it! I liked the fielding because I like the fielding. I would like to do this again.
Sophie in Y5 - We also did some batting with soft cricket balls. The fielders had to run and collect the ball. One task was running around the cones before the fielders brought back the ball.
Freddie in Y5 - For the warm up we did heads, shoulders, knees, toes and cones to collect the cone the fastest. If it was a draw, we had to do rock, paper, scissors to see who gets the cone and the point. The coaches were really supportive and helpful.
Benji in Y4 - I enjoyed the batting. I already play cricket so it was a way of practising my skills before the summer. The coaches were really friendly. They helped people who hadn't played before. We were given stickers at the end.
Callum in Y4 - I liked the throwing the balls and learning how to catch.
Cerys in Y4 - I was learning how to bowl. I would like to play cricket again in the future.
We hope to be able to offer workshops the other classes in Y4 and 5 later in the year. The coaches emailed me to say that the children were absolutely fantastic! Mrs Woodward - PE Lead
Sport Leader Festival - November 2022
A group of children from Y5 and 6 represented The Elms at a Sports Leader Festival today. Children from FCC had organised a number of different sports activities to improve agility, balance and coordination, which are our fundamental movement skills.
The children from The Elms completed agility ladders, practised throwing and catching techniques, balanced objected on their heads and worked on their team building skills. Kitty in Y6 enjoyed one of the games so much that she imitated it on the playground at lunch time as one of her Play Leader games.
A special mention goes to Damon, who included others in the activities and gave feedback to his peers.
Mrs Gardiner, Mrs Smith and Mrs Woodward are proud of all the children for their determination and self-belief during the event.
Tag Rugby - October 2022
On a lovely warm autumnal afternoon, 14 children from across years 5 and 6 took part in a Tag Rugby event at FCC. The event was an introduction to the sport and the opportunity to learn the skills to play. Everyone who took part really enjoyed themselves. You never know, you may see some of them play for their country one day! Mr Smith.
Thank you to Mr Smith, Mrs Henman and Mrs Woodward for supporting the children with this event.
