The Elms
Primary School
Vision:
At The Elms Primary School, children will understand and be inspired by diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments - from local to international experiences - and achieve a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical processes and the impact these have on people’s lives.
A Geographer is a scientist who studies the world around them (Physical features) and how humans interact with it (human features).
Our Curriculum:
Geography at The Elms is taught in a sequence of 'ripples,' where knowledge of people and place expands for children. Learning develops from children's known, lived and local spaces before discovering more about national and international locations as well as global processes. This locational knowledge is then extended both nationally and globally. Through use of maps, atlases and globes, children develop a basic awareness of different countries and continents and the varying climates around the world.
By examining human and physical features, children are able to compare and contrast their own environments and cultures with those of other places. This process permits growth of observational skills and the ability to analyse maps and aerial photographs. Field work undertaken in a variety of environments allows development of positional and directional language, and underpins a sense of orientation supporting creative map making. In our curriculum, we cover the skills and knowledge in the National Curriculum.
As children enter upper KS2 children are provided with opportunities to consider greater geographical themes such as: movement, sustainability, and human vs physical power. To ensure geography has a relevance to our children, all geography topics are linked back to Faringdon and the children at The Elms.
The Geography curriculum provides clear and explicit opportunities for children to understand the world they live in and to show an understanding of difference including British Values and links to SMSC. Where possible- texts are used to enhance the geography curriculum- especially non-fiction and picture books.
